Downtown Public Art Guide

Where to Go

"Public art does more than decorate the spaces we share. It informs and enhances our sense of community. It links us across time to the imaginative work of previous generations. In Galveston, this is especially true, because so much of what was created in the preceding two centuries still stands.

Many of Galveston's public buildings contain works of art well worth viewing. From the Rosenberg Library, to the corridors of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Texas A&M University at Galveston, and Galveston College, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and creations in glass and ceramic reflect and stimulate the imagination. Throughout the city, hundreds of buildings themselves could arguably be termed art, so graceful is their design and creative their use of detail. However, the Galveston Commission for the Arts, a city commission consisting of volunteers representing a range of the arts, decided this guide would be most useful for residents and visitors alike if it focused on public art that could be viewed at any time by car.

This guide contains brief descriptions of these works, organized, generally, from east to west. Each piece is identified by a number which appears on the map, indicating a suggested driving route. Due to space restrictions there are not photographs of all the pieces. Additional photographs appear on the Galveston Convention and Visitors Bureau web site, Galveston.com.

Funded by the Arts and Historic Preservation Board, City of Galveston, and a contribution by Cecile Kempner.
