New International Event Coming To Galveston

Get out of your cars and onto your bike, feet, or bus because World Carfree Day is on the way! On September 22, the world will catch a glimpse of an easier and more joyous way of life. All around the globe, sections of streets and plazas will be closed to cars and opened to events celebrating reasons to go car free.

On Galveston Island, we're having a celebration at the Galveston Railroad Museum from 11am to 1pm. Island Transit will offer free bus transportation throughout the day!

There will be music, fun and a celebration of the winners of a week-long Carfree Challenge, be dazzled by velocouture, see artist renderings of Galveston's future downtown transit terminal, find out about the upcoming commuter rail connection to the mainland, see an exhibit of Galveston's proposed bike lanes, and get up-close-and-personal with subscription sharing of electric bikes, scooters, Zipcars and other exciting ways to kick the car habit.

But the main reasons to celebrate Carfree Day are that kicking the car-habit will improve quality of life and increase economic vitality.

Going CarFree:

  • Increases foot traffic that is essential to the success of storefront businesses:
  • Reduces our waistline;
  • Relieves the stresses of traffic congestion, parking hassles, and engine malfunctions;
  • Increases the opportunity of getting to know our neighborhoods and neighbors; and
  • Enhances an attractive, safe, and historic Galveston streetscape.

CarFree Day Galveston is sponsored by the Historic Downtown Strand Seaport Partnership, Island Transit, and The Goodman Corporation.

Join with your friends and neighbors to invent a future with cleaner air, better health, and greater economic vitality. Come to the party! Go CarFree!
