Welcome to Historic Downtown Galveston

No trip to Galveston Island is complete without visiting the
Historic Downtown, Strand & Seaport. Once known as the “Wall Street of the Southwest”, Galveston’s famed avenue, The Strand, anchors the historic downtown. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its outstanding collection of 19th century architecture, today The Strand is the heart of a vibrant downtown and waterfront offering shopping, dining, museums, entertainment, accommodations and nightlife.

Wear your walking shoes, because the 70+block historic downtown has much more to offer beyond The Strand, and it’s all within walking distance! Explore Postoffice Street, home of The Grand 1894 Opera House and discover art galleries, boutiques, chic bars & restaurants, live theater and more. Venture along 25th Street for an eclectic mix of shops, salons and warehouse galleries.

Tired of walking? Hail a horse drawn carriage and you can quickly make your way to the waterfront. Here, fish markets nestle adjacent to restaurants offering the freshest Gulf seafood with amazing views of the harbor. Downtown’s historic seaport transports you to the past with maritime museums and the 1877 tall ship, Elissa, and for many, the nearby cruise terminal starts the beginning of an exotic vacation.

Treat yourself to a whole weekend downtown. Relax in luxury at a full service downtown hotel, unwind in a room with a harbor view, or pamper yourself in Victorian opulence with a stay in a historic bed & breakfast.

Downtown is back... see for yourself!
